Itinerary 5 days off-road motorcycle tour from Fes to dunes of Merzouga
Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud
Your off-road adventure begins as you leave the bustling city of Fes and quickly ascend into the cool, forested mountains of the Middle Atlas. After passing Ifrane often called “the Switzerland of Morocco” you ride through the cedar forests of Azrou where Barbary macaque monkeys can often be seen. The road becomes more rugged as you continue toward Midelt, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and high-altitude plains.
After lunch, you ride across the breathtaking Ziz Valley, known for its palm groves, ancient irrigation systems, and wide canyon views. Continue toward Erfoud on dusty tracks and desert-flavored roads, arriving at your hotel on the edge of the Sahara.
Day 2: Erfoud – Jorf – Rissani – Merzouga
This day takes you deeper into desert landscapes. You leave Erfoud via scenic off-road trails, crossing stone plateaus and riverbeds carved by centuries of flooding. Continue to Jorf, famous for its ancient underground irrigation channels known as “khettaras.”
The ride then leads to Rissani, once a major stop for trans-Saharan caravans and the birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty. From here, the horizon begins to glow with golden sand as the great dunes of Merzouga appear. Arrive at your lodge at the foot of Erg Chebbi, enjoy sunset views, and prepare for the next day’s desert loop.
Day 3: Merzouga – Off-Road Erg Chebbi Loop – Nomads – Black Desert – Merzouga
A full day of pure off-road desert riding awaits you. Start early to avoid the midday heat and begin circling the Erg Chebbi dunes. Ride through sandy tracks, black volcanic desert, and rocky plains dotted with acacia trees.
Visit the Gnawa village of Khamlia for traditional desert music, then continue to remote nomad camps where families still live in traditional tents. Enjoy technical sections of sand, fesh-fesh, and desert pistes similar to Dakar Rally routes. Return to Merzouga for another peaceful night under the stars.
Day 4: Merzouga – Alnif – Tazarine – Todra – Boumalne Dades
Depart Merzouga by riding across stone deserts and fossil-rich areas toward Alnif. This region is known for trilobites and prehistoric landscapes. Continue to Tazarine following winding mountain-edge tracks bordered by desert plateaus.
The scenery shifts as you approach the Todra region, one of the most spectacular canyons in Morocco. Explore the Todra Gorges on your motorcycle, riding between towering 300-meter cliffs. Continue to Boumalne Dades where the colours of the sandstone mountains give the valley a magical evening glow.
Day 5: Boumalne Dades – Imilchil – Khenifra – Fes
Your final day offers one of the most scenic rides of the entire tour. Cross the dramatic serpent-shaped Dades road before climbing into the high mountains. Ride through remote Berber villages and rugged tracks leading to the lakes of Imilchil, famous for their legends.
Continue through vast pine forests toward Khenifra, enjoying a mix of off-road sections and winding mountain asphalt. The final stretch brings you back to Fes, completing your extraordinary motorcycle adventure across Morocco’s mountains, valleys, and desert dunes.
